Valuations

Sotheby's Valuations and Estate Management Department can prepare valuations for property that has an auction market to suit a variety of needs, including:

  • Collection Valuation
  • Insurance
  • Charitable Contribution

A completed valuation will include detailed property descriptions and itemized values in a bound document with an affidavit and summary page. Sotheby's valuations are widely accepted by the Internal Revenue Service and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, tax and estate planning professionals, and insurance firms.

Depending on the location of the property, Sotheby's will offer a gratis initial walk-through or a preliminary review of property listings and photographs (if available) to determine the size and scope of the project.

Fees for written valuations are quoted on a per specialist, per diem basis or a fixed fee and are based on the volume and nature of the property, as well as the amount of time and number of specialists required. Sotheby's will refund the fee pro rata should you consign any of the appraised property for sale within one year of the valuation date.

 

Estate Management

Sotheby’s Valuations and Estate Management Department works directly with the Trusts and Estates Department to assist in managing Estate valuations that result in consignment. A member of the department will serve as a consistent point of contact throughout both the valuation and consignment process to ensure a seamless client experience.

 

AUCTION ESTIMATES & OTHER ADVICE

In the event that a sale is considered, we would be pleased to provide auction estimates, an in-depth proposal for sale and a comprehensive marketing plan, depending upon the property's value. When sales are underway, the group works closely with the appropriate specialist departments to ensure that clients' needs are met promptly and efficiently.
