Japanese Art

Overview

Sotheby's Asian art Departments in Paris and New York handles a selection of Japanese works of art which include prints, paintings, screens, lacquer, Netsuke and inro, ceramics, cloisonne enamel, ivory carvings, metalwork, armour, swords and sword fittings. Paris and New York are Sotheby's centres for Japanese Art sales, especially when it comes to the dispersal of private single-owner collections. Most notably in the past years, we offered in Paris the collection of Hugette Beres of Japanese prints and illustration books, in London the legendary Adolphe Stoclet collection of important prints, the Alan Harvie collection of Tsuba (sword fittings); the renowned Katchen Netsuke collection, many of the pieces from these sales achieved outstanding prices [some securing Auction records] and are featured in our 'Notable works of art' page.
The Asian department in Paris holds two sales a year in June and December. New York sales are held during the Asian week in March and October.
