Overview
Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art and 19th Century European Paintings departments offer German and Austrian paintings and drawings from 1800. Their specialist sales cover a wide range of established artists, from leading figures in the nineteenth-century Romantic movement to major exponents of German & Austrian Expressionist and 1930s Neue Sachlichkeit art.
Sotheby's is unique among the international auction houses in promoting 19th century German, Austrian and Central European paintings in an annual sale dedicated to the field. Initially focused on German and Austrian works, in 2002 the sale was extended to include Hungarian, Czech and Polish paintings, in response to the growth of these emerging markets, and increasing international demand for paintings from these countries.
Promotion of the sale includes a travelling exhibition of highlights to Vienna, Munich and Hamburg in May. Over the last five years we have sold £20 million of German, Austrian, and Central European works in London.
