Chinese Paintings
OverviewAn integral part of the bi-annual week of sales at Sothebys Hong Kong each Spring and Autumn, the auctions of traditional fine Chinese paintings emphasise the importance of traditional and modern artistic tradition. The works offered underline the connection between poetry, calligraphy, painting and the artists seal, which should be appreciated and understood as a whole. The Chinese Paintings department is well-respected throughout Asia and head of department, C. K. Cheung, is the mastermind behind numerous successful sales. These include the auctions of Wu Guanzhongs Along the Yangtze River offered personally by the artist himself (October 2008); the record-breaking Important Chinese Paintings from The Robert Chang Collection Part I (April 2006) and Part II (October 2007); Vermillion Pavillion Collection of Twentieth Century Fine Chinese Paintings (October 2006); and Crimson Lotuses on Gold Screen by Zhang Daqian (October 2002). |
